Project Objectives

The teacher development sessions are informed by the following workshop objectives:

1. Enhancing Content Knowledge which will deepen teachers' understanding of the subject matter, including important concepts, theories, and current developments in mathematics and science.

2. Enhancing Pedagogical Skills leading to improved teachers' instructional methods and strategies in mathematics and science education.

3. Integration of Technology in math and science teaching.

4. Helping teachers foster critical thinking skills in students, encouraging them to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems in math and science.

6. Practical, hands-on activities and experiments that they can use in their classrooms to make math and science more engaging.

7. Providing resources and materials like textbooks, online platforms, and other materials that can support effective teaching in math and science.

8. Create opportunities for teachers to network, collaborate, and share ideas with colleagues from different schools.

The Impande Steam Project is a Math and Physical Sciences project focusing on nine High Schools of the UGU District under the Kwa-Xolo traditional authority area of KwaZulu-Natal. The project is funded by NETWORK ACTION GROUP operating as IMPANDE.

The project was initiated by the KwaXolo Inkosi together with the KwaXolo Education Committee approaching CASME to assist with the training of Math and Science teachers through workshops and supporting them through school visits. The aim of the project is to improve the uptake of STEM subjects at grade 10 level as well as to improve learner results in Maths and Physical Sciences at Grade 12.

The project started with a number of meetings which were aimed at finalising terms of reference which were to inform the project implementation. These meetings were between CASME and all Stakeholders namely, Brian Liggett representing the Donor, Mr Phehlukwayo, Representing KwaXolo Education Committee (EC) and Department of Basic Education (DBE) Officials.  KwaXolo Inkosi was involved in some of the meetings.

AS per Donor and CASME agreement, the project roll out is as follows:

  • The project to focuses on High Schools, Grades 10-12
  • The project to Focuses on both Maths and Physical Sciences only
  • The project entails one workshop for teachers per term for both Mathematics and Physical Sciences
  • The project further entails one visit per school per term for classroom support for Maths teachers and one school visit per school per term focusing on Physical Science practicals
  • Workshops, school visits and practicals take place during term 1,2 and 3
  • Maths and Science Competitions take place during term 4 culminating in awards functions
